Partner content: How old are the eggs?
Question: How can I tell how old eggs are at Ingles Markets?
Answer: You should see a number on the side of the egg carton. This is known as the JULIAN DATE. The Julian date shows you the year and date those eggs were packed, which would normally be within a few hours of the hens producing them.
The Julian Date starts with January 1st which would be 001. So, if you were to see 26001 that would mean and egg was packed on January 1st 2026 and January 31st would be 26031. Once eggs are packed, they are normally sold for about 4 weeks after that Julian Date, and you might see that listed as a “Sell By” date. Certain eggs always “move” (are sold) faster. Our Laura Lynn eggs come from Northeast Georgia may be laid by hens, packaged and shipped to our warehouse in Swannanoa all within just a couple of days so Laura Lynn eggs may end up at your local Ingles Market in the same week they were packaged.
