Partner content: Trends/Fads for 2026

Two of the trends/fads that you can expect to see reflected in products on the shelves at your local Ingles Markets are callouts for protein amounts and callouts for fiber amounts.

Both protein and fiber are macronutrients.

Most people think about protein coming from meat, chicken, fish, eggs and dairy products and fiber coming from fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains.

If you’re looking for protein AND fiber, think about how you can add foods with fiber to that protein-rich meal. (example: A serving of chicken or fish along with a salad or grilled vegetables)

If you want to add more protein to a fiber-rich, plant-based meal, adding some animal-based protein would do the trick. (example: A bowl of grilled vegetables and grains topped with grated cheese or scrambled egg)

Related Items

Want to eat foods that already have both protein and fiber?  You’re not going to find that in animal products!  Look for beans (including soy beans/edamame) and legumes (canned or dried), steel-cut oats, nuts, seeds (especially chia seeds), wild rice, tofu, tempeh

At our inception 20 years ago, we chose to be different. Unlike other news organizations, we made the decision to provide in-depth, regional reporting free to anyone who wanted access to it. We don’t plan to change that model. Support from our readers will help us maintain and strengthen the editorial independence that is crucial to our mission to help make Western North Carolina a better place to call home. If you are able, please support The Smoky Mountain News.

The Smoky Mountain News is a wholly private corporation. Reader contributions support the journalistic mission of SMN to remain independent. Your support of SMN does not constitute a charitable donation. If you have a question about contributing to SMN, please contact us.
