N.C. launches climate resiliency program

North Carolina has launched a new initiative to help the state prepare for the impacts of climate change while reducing damages from future natural disasters.

The N.C. Resilient Communities Program will help local governments build capacity for resiliency, provide technical assistance and fund planning and implementation of strategic resilience projects. The program is a priority in the state’s Climate Risk Assessment and Resilience Plan.

The program was established by the N.C. Office of Recovery and Resiliency in the Department of Public Safety, N.C. Division of Coastal Management in the Department of Environmental Quality and the N.C. Rural Center. NCORR and DCM staff will lead the effort, to be implemented through partnerships across state agencies and community organizations. A total of $3.4 million in state and federal grant funding has been secured toward that end.
