Roller derby debut upcoming in Bryson City

The Smoky Mountain Roller Girls, an all female roller derby league, will hold its debut competition from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at the Swain County Recreation Center on Deep Creek Road in Bryson City.

The event also will feature live music, belly dancers, half time entertainment, concessions, raffles and door prizes. This will be a fundraiser for the Bryson City Food Pantry.

Admission is $5 donation or five nonperishable food items.

The Smoky Mountain Roller Girls holds practices on Sundays from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and Wednesdays 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Swain County Recreation Center.     out natcornLast week, we set the stage for the 29th annual Great Smoky Mountains Birding Expedition (GSMBE). The group starts at 9 a.m. at George and Elizabeth Ellison’s office/studio in downtown Bryson City. I know, birders out there are rolling their eyes — to start a count at 9 a.m. is like missing half the day, but there are caveats.
