Downhill racing season heats up at Cataloochee

The ski racing season kicked off at Cataloochee Ski Area last week. More than 200 skiers and snowboarders from middle schools and high schools across the region competed for the best downhill times during the inaugural week of racing.

You don’t have to be a skier to enjoy a piece of the action. The deck of the ski lodge offers a view of the slopes for spectators.

Here’s the racing line-up:

• Adult Cataloochee Challenge Cup Series: Thursdays at 7 p.m.

• Recreational Race Series: Sundays at 1 p.m.

• Middle school: Tuesdays at 7 p.m.

• High school: Wednesdays at 7 p.m.

    out natcornLast week, we set the stage for the 29th annual Great Smoky Mountains Birding Expedition (GSMBE). The group starts at 9 a.m. at George and Elizabeth Ellison’s office/studio in downtown Bryson City. I know, birders out there are rolling their eyes — to start a count at 9 a.m. is like missing half the day, but there are caveats.
