Folklorist to discuss Cherokee heritage

art barbaraduncanA free program on Cherokee Indian heritage by folklorist Dr. Barbara Duncan will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at the Haywood County Library in Waynesville.

 

Duncan, the education director at the Museum of the Cherokee Indian in Cherokee, will highlight significant events in Cherokee history. Learn about the resilience of the Cherokee people and how their customs and traditions have prevailed through hardships.  

Duncan has written Living Stories of the Cherokee, a collection of Cherokee stories. The book received the Thomas Wolfe Literary Award and the World Storytelling Award. Another book, The Cherokee Heritage Trails Guidebook, received the Preserve America Presidential Award. It describes more than 100 sites in North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia, which tell the story of the Cherokee people over the past thousand years.

The presentation is hosted by the Friends of the Library.
