Top female office holders to attend Democratic rally

Some of the top Democratic women office holders in the state will appear at a rally in Sylva at the historic courthouse on Saturday, Aug. 11.

State Democratic women coming to the event include Secretary of State Elaine Marshall, State Auditor Beth Wood, State Treasurer Janet Cowell, state superintendent of public schools June Atkinson. All four are running for re-election. Also in attendance will be Linda Coleman, Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor.

The rally will start at 3:30 p.m., including stump speeches by the state leaders and candidates.

After serving in the state Senate, Marshall in 1996 became the first woman elected to a statewide executive branch office in North Carolina. Wood has been the state auditor since 2008. Cowell, North Carolina’s first female treasurer, oversees more than $70 billion in pension fund investments for the state’s 850,000 employees and retirees.

Atkinson, meanwhile, is responsible for more than 2,500 public schools enrolling more than 1.5 million students.

Coleman served three years in the North Carolina House and was selected by Governor Bev Perdue to be director of the State Employees Association.
