Oaks Gallery features works from local potters
SMN

A special showing of new work by three featured potters — Sylvia Coppola, Susan Phillips and Gloria Stockton — will be presented at Oaks Gallery in Dillsboro Nov. 6-8.

Phillips, a native of Dillsboro, graduated from Haywood Community College’s weaving and pottery programs in 2002. Since establishing Flying Cat Studio with several other potters, Phillips has produced an eclectic mix of sculpture and functional tableware.

Among her most popular work are birdhouses that reflect shapes in nature — gourds, acorns, pine cones, leaves and vines — in clay. Her newest work, a collection of sculptural rabbits, will also be featured at the show’s opening.

Stockton, whose home and Ochre Hills Pottery are in Sylva, creates functional midrange stoneware that is fired in oxidation.

“I love it when someone picks up my bit of clay made into art and they ‘fit.’ That fit, and the feel of my pots, whether utilitarian or sculptural, is satisfying to the practical me and it pleases my artistic sense, too,” she said.

Stockton graduated from the professional crafts program at Haywood Community College in 2005 and has worked as a professional potter since that time. Candle holders and “duck head” casseroles are among the pieces she will present this weekend.

Coppola is a studio potter who has been working in clay since 1976. She earned her BFA degree from Western Carolina University, and established Duck Creek Pottery on her farm 20 years ago. Her work has evolved from round wheel forms to thrown and altered work, which sometimes includes hand built pots. The glaze colors she uses include plums, browns, blues and greens. Textured surfaces, sometimes hand carved into the clay, enhanced by these warm, rich colors, decorate much of her work. Among the many utilitarian types of pottery she makes, teapots are a specialty.

Coppola conducts pottery classes and workshops at Duck Creek Pottery and at other sites around North Carolina.

A reception will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 6 and will provide an opportunity to meet these three women potters and view their most recent work. Oaks Gallery is located at the Riverwood Shops. For more information, call 828.586.6542.
