Landmark teaches to think quick, act fast in outdoor emergencies

Landmark Learning, an outdoor training base camp in Cullowhee, offers an amazing line-up of courses on everything from handling medical emergencies and injuries in wilderness settings to backcountry ethics.

The courses are geared toward professionals in the outdoor industry, but are frequently attended by outdoor enthusiasts who want to know how to be prepared on their own adventures and how to respond to emergencies.

ACA Swiftwater Rescue

The most comprehensive training for whitewater trip leaders. Involves hands-on practice time and advanced rescues including Rescue PFDs and mechanical advantage on the Tuckaseegee River. Dates: Sept. 13 – 14

Leave No Trace Master Educator Course

Become an instructor in Leave No Trace principles. This course is for those who will teach the teachers in the Leave No Trace field. Three days of the course will be spent backpacking and practicing Leave No Trace skills. Dates: Aug. 11-15, Sept. 22-26.

Wilderness Lifeguard Instructor Training

After completing the Wilderness Lifeguard program, take this additional two-day training to become an Instructor candidate of the Wilderness Starguard® program. Dates: Sept. 2-5.

Wilderness First Responder Course

Learn necessary tools to make critical medical and evacuation decisions in remote locations. Course covers practical skills, like what to do for snake bites, how to treat hypothermia, or stabilizing broken bones. Includes case studies and hands-on scenarios designed to challenge decision-making abilities. Dates: Dec. 13-21.

EMT-Basic Training

Earn the certifications you need to become an Emergency Medical Technician. Instructors are both healthcare professionals and trained educators who work regularly with patients in emergency settings. Dates: Sept. 29 – Oct. 18.

Wilderness Upgrade for Medical Professionals

Ideal for EMT’s, nurses, physicians, and other medical professionals, course builds upon your background in emergency care by learning how to improvise equipment, deal with challenging environmental conditions, and make difficult medical decisions in remote locations. Dates: Aug. 4-9, Oct. 20-25.

Wilderness EMT 3+1 Format

The first three weeks of the experience is focused on EMT-Basic training, with an immersion into urban care. At the end of the EMT experience, tack on the Wilderness Upgrade for Medical Professionals to receive your WEMT certification. Dates: Sept. 29-Oct. 25.

Refresher Training Program for EMT – Basic

Time to be recertified? Our EMT refresher course makes certain you get the 24-hours of training required by the National Registry for approval. Dates: Nov. 14-16.

Wilderness First Responder Recertification

This three day scenario-based course is designed as review and practice of evacuation and decision making guidelines and may be used to recertify Wilderness First Responder and Wilderness EMT (wilderness portion only) certifications. Dates: Dec. 5-7.
