Haywood County Sheriff Tom Alexander says he has no plans to resign his post after being named by a witness in the trial of Buncombe County Sheriff Bobby Medford for allegedly accepting illegal payouts from a gaming operator.
“I have no plans to step down from my position at this point. I’m still working every day,” Alexander said.
The sheriff received a subpoena last week ordering him to provide all records he possesses related to video gambling.
“I cooperated with the authorities over there in the past, and I’m going to continue to do that. I’ve got an attorney; he’s familiar with the system. I’ll get all the records right I’ve been asked to produce,” he said.
Alexander, who has not been formally charged with any crimes, has retained Asheville attorney Shaun Devereaux.
