Goodman edges out Leatherman in Macon
By Jennifer Garlesky • Staff Writer

Two-term incumbent Charlie Leatherman was ousted from his county commission seat by a small margin of votes on Tuesday. Republican challenger Jimmy Goodman received the nomination.

The upset came as a surprise to Goodman.

“I am glad that it’s all over,” he said in a telephone interview. “It’s time for new ideas in Macon County. I want to bring new ideas to the seat.”

Goodman has been mum on certain issues, like whether he supports a land-use plan for the county. He has said that he supports small schools in a previous interview.

Leatherman, now chairman of the board, did not return phone calls seeking comment. Leathermen, 57, hoped to serve another term and aspired to increase the county’s job opportunities.

Voters will choose between Goodman and Democratic candidate Bobby Kuppers Jr. in the November election.

Goodman plans to continue to campaign all the way up to the November election. He plans to continue to promote his platform of increasing citizen participation with the local government.

“I promise to work on getting the commissioners’ meeting broadcasts on the web so citizens can watch the meeting from their computer,” he said.

He also wants to set up an e-voting section on the county’s Web site.
