The historic cabins, churches, school houses and farmhouses that date back to the times of early Appalachian settlers in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are in need of a little TLC from volunteers. The Smokies has launched a new Adopt-a-Cabin program to pair up volunteers with one of 90 historic structure in the park.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park holds one of the best collections of log buildings in the eastern United States. Regular clean-up of these buildings is needed to remove trash, debris and graffiti which are often left behind by park visitors.
Volunteers who sign on to the program will visit their “adopted” cabin at least once a month to sweep, wipe and dry walls with a light dishwashing solution, clean the windows, and remove graffiti using a special removal solution.
