Library to host free Aikido class

A free Aikido class for participants ages 16 and older will take place at 7 p.m. June 19 at the Jackson County Public Library in Sylva.

Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art. It is considered a “soft” art that utilizes a variety of throws, pins and off-balancing techniques to defend against an attack without necessarily harming the attacker. It does not require undue physical strength and can be practiced by almost anyone.

Instructor Timm Muth, of White Dragon Academy in Sylva, began his martial arts training in 1975 and studied aikido for 15 years under Sensei Ned Danieley of Chapel Hill and Shihan Fumio Toyoda of Chicago. Muth will instruct participants in the basics of Aikido. The class size is limited to the first eight people to sign up and participants should wear comfortable clothing. 828.586.2106.
