Angel Primary Care added a new doctor to their practice. Dr. Donald Dewhurst graduated from Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem in 1975. Dewhurst has been a family physician in Franklin since 1980 and has served in various capacities with Angel Medical Center.

Angel Medical Center added a new OB/GYN to their obstetrics staff, Dr. Carole J. Peterson, who comes to Franklin from Rochester, N.Y., where she was a founding partner of Women Gynecology & Childbirth Associates.

The Haywood County Chapter of Medical Assistants awarded Beverly Yarborough the MaryNell DeWeese Scholarship. It was based up on character, professionalism, academic success, and financial need. Yarborough is a student at Haywood Community College, is currently performing a clinical practicum at Western Cardiology in Clyde and is a full-time medical technician at the Hermitage in Jackson County.

Larry Blythe, vice chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, was selected by a nationwide consortium of tribes to serve as president of the Board of Directors of the Inter-Tribal Timber Council. The ITC, a consortium of 60 tribes, works with the Bureau of Indian Affairs to explore issues and identify practical strategies and initiatives to promote social, economic, and ecological values while protecting and utilizing forests, soil, water, and wildlife.

A scholarship for Haywood Community College students over the age of 30 has been established in honor of Eunice Fisher Brown. Brown had close ties to HCC and upon her death designated funds to the scholarship. The focus of the $800 annual scholarship is to provide funds for non-traditional students who have been out of school for at least 10 years, have a financial need, and want to make a career change.

Nancy Fish, a beef cattle operator and retired teacher from Maggie Valley, was appointed to the USDA four-member Farm Service Agency State Committee.

Employees at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino and Hotel continue a partnership with PAWS, a no kill animal shelter in Bryson City. The program started in 2009 with a total of $4,830 donated to date.

Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Hotel donated $25,000 to Manna Food Bank, for a total contribution of $61,000 to the agency since 2001.

Jackson Paper Manufacturing donated $525 to Jackson County’s 4-H Adopt-A-Tree program. The donation funded the purchase of 350 Norway spruce tree seedlings, which were distributed to fifth grade students in Jackson County.

MedWest-Haywood recently completed a successful survey by The Joint Commission, an organization that accredits and certifies U.S. hospitals on safety and quality. MedWest-Haywood is planning an ice cream social to thank the employees for their dedication.

Mission Hospital was received an “Outstanding Achievement Award” from The Commission on Cancer of the American Colleges of Surgeons for providing quality care to cancer patients. They have also been named one of the top 15 health systems in the nation by Thomas Reuters.  Mission is one of 106 accredited cancer programs in America to receive the award.

Mission Hospital’s SECU Cancer Center received a LEED certification from The U.S. Green Building Council making it one of three gold-certified cancer centers in the nation.

J. Hunter Murphy of Waynesville is relocating his law practice from Sylva to 370 N. Main Street, Suite 201 in Waynesville this month. He concentrates his practice in civil and criminal law and will continue to provide legal counsel to clients in Western North Carolina.

With the help of the Evergreen Foundation, The Arc of Haywood County purchased a wheelchair van to be used for the Woodlawn ICF group home. The van has enough storage for three wheelchairs.

The Waynesville Garden Club presented a $1,000 gift to The Homestead Hospice Center at MedWest-Haywood. The funds are for a garden in memory of Garden Club member and past president Eunice Fisher Brown.

Lisa Briggs, professor of criminology and criminal justice at Western Carolina University, was named one of the best teachers in the University of North Carolina system. Briggs is among 17 recipients of the UNC Board of Governors Awards for Excellence in Teaching.
