Hike the MST in nine minutes

A nine-minute tour of the 1,175-mile Mountains-to-Sea Trail is now available from the comfort of any couch within reach of an internet connection.

On Sept. 9, the trail’s 40th birthday, more than 1,700 people collaborated to hike the entire trail in a single day. Volunteer Jerry Barker turned the photos hikers sent into a video that pictures the trail from Clingmans Dome to Jockey’s Ridge, also capturing the beauty and fun of that special day.

At our inception 20 years ago, we chose to be different. Unlike other news organizations, we made the decision to provide in-depth, regional reporting free to anyone who wanted access to it. We don’t plan to change that model. Support from our readers will help us maintain and strengthen the editorial independence that is crucial to our mission to help make Western North Carolina a better place to call home. If you are able, please support The Smoky Mountain News.
