Davis set out on her adventure Aug. 15 from Clingmans Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, hiking all the way to Jockey’s Ridge in the Outer Banks in an effort to commemorate the MST’s 40th anniversary and raise money for its continued maintenance and construction. Her husband Brew and their two children — ages 4 and 11 months — accompanied her for a portion of that distance.

In 2011, Davis finished the Appalachian Trail with the fastest time ever recorded. While that record was surpassed in 2015, she is still well known in the hiking world and recently published the book Families on Foot.
