Holland, Jenkins to face off in November for sheriff

Former North Carolina Highway Patrolman C.D. Jenkins emerged from a field of three Democrats to win the Macon County Sheriff’s primary and the opportunity to run against incumbent Sheriff Robert Holland.

Jenkins easily beat his opponents, Fred Munger and J.J. McCall, capturing 74 percent of the votes cast. He garnered 1,619 votes to 384 for McCall and 182 for Munger.

Jenkins has a long history in law enforcement. Besides retiring from the Highway Patrol, he is an officer with the Highlands Police Department and was formerly a chief deputy in the Graham County Sheriff’s office.

“I’ve got the experience and there’s certainly some things I would to pursue as far as trying to make Macon County a better place for everybody to live,” said Jenkins.

Come November Jenkins will square off against Holland, who won even more convincingly than Jenkins. Holland garnered 75 percent of the vote in his race against Richard Davis. Holland took 2,182 votes to Davis’ 711.

Holland has been a popular sheriff who has worked to involve the community in law enforcement matters.

Perhaps the most striking difference between the two primary winners is their age: Jenkins is 62 and Holland is 39.
